condoleeza: the motherhawk has landed
US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice has arrived in the UK for a controversial visit that has already been dogged by hiccups. Protests are planned by the Stop The War Coalition and Moslem Groups. A poet in Liverpool who was to compere a gala concert in her honour pulled out. Now a mosque she was due to visit in Blackburn has cancelled.
Now all that's left is for me to recall Spike Lee's words about the Bush Administration's - and Condoleeza's - response to Hurricane Katrina, as reported in one of the weekend papers.
"I don't think they cared about the poor citizens of the United States of America. Look at the Secretary of State, shopping for a fine pair of shoes that day and seeing Spamalot on Broadway that night. She was booed when the lights came up in the theatre. A woman came up to her in the shop and started talking to her about what was going on. She was pulled away by secret service. We're trying to find that lady... I know this stuff happened. It is documented." - Spike Lee

I agree that Conda Rice deserves the title for Motherhawk or even MotherFawk as described by St antonym...
I also don't agree with the war and the lies and the invassion of iraq etc....
But why does the criticism always seem louder,more vicious, more personall,more stereotypicaly sexist when its a female??? The SHE-devil always seems to be more villified than the HE-devil??
As a woman, i think she's been focused, determined and YES...career/goal orientated. She's in a position that most white (never mind black) males would die for. As the US Foreign secretary...She's perhaps the most powerful woman in the world....and She is BLACK! So what she works for the devil and she promotes his evil doctrines and paves the way for his evil deeds...That's her job!..And she obviously enjoys it very much.
She may even become the first black-female presidential candidate in US history...
I'm sorry i think she's opened the gates for greater good especially for females and black females for that matter...and that's ok in my book...
And quite frankly i don't have to like her politics to appreciate all of the above facts....

Considering that thousands have trooped to the streets of Britain in the past to protest at George Bush's visits, I don't think the MotherHawk is getting more abuse or protest than the 'Devil'.
I've forgotten how Harry Belafonte put it, but I think it was something along the lines of: Colin Powell & Condoleeza Rice rose the highest levels of American government and society off the backs of millions of African Americans whose lot have worsened. It is well known that Powell was a reluctant hawk, a closet dove, really. That's why Condo, a hawk through and through, will probably succeed more than the former General.
Talk about selling your people down the drawn...
Condoleeza Rice represents so many things that I abhor, and the facts of her blackness and womanness do nothing to soften my views.

Molara, I second your views completely.
English friends of mine have accused me of holding Condi to a higher standard because she's black and that that is illogical-the standards for moral behaviour should not blur depending on who is held up to the light.And while on an intellectual level I accept that accusation, on a human individual, physical level I find it difficult to let Condi off.
At least with George Bush you could argue (rightly or wrongly) he knows no better. With Condi- with her PhD and her classmate killed in the racist Alabama bombings- what mitigating factors can she plead?
Why is she now courting Europe? I thought they needed no allies and were self-sufficient?
If this is the best hope for a black female president then I can't help but think " Roll on white male candidates"
